Case Studies » Illumina Ltd

The challenge

A request was made by Illumina Cambridge Ltd. to consider compliance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) for the company’s existing facility at Chesterford Research Park,Essex. Also for the company’s new facility development at Granta Park, Great Abington, Cambridge.

The site’s core business is genome research, equipment and test kits.

As part of the operations there is storage and handling of flammable materials, with some significant decanting of flammable liquid likely on-site in the liquid waste area. There were also bulk diesel fuel storage to consider.

The existing site houses around 250 staff and the new facility will house around 750 staff.

The solution provided

A detailed review of both existing operations at the current site and proposed plans for the new site was undertaken. For each a detailed DSEAR report, hazardous area classification and an action plan to direct the business moving forwards was provided.

To support this we have been party to a series of conference calls to help the business understand its priorities in relation to DSEAR compliance.
